What is Acne?

Acne Vulgaris is the common form of acne, characterized by a mixed eruption of inflammatory and non-inflammatory skin lesions. The most basic form of acne and the starting point for all other types of breakouts is known as a comedone.

There are two kinds: open comedones (blackheads) and closed comedones (whiteheads). These can remain as they are or progress into more inflamed forms of acne, like papules, pustules, or cysts, explained by Dr. Marchbein.

Whiteheads: a different form of comedone. Unlike blackheads, the pore’s opening closes off, forming what’s called a “closed comedone.” Because the blockage is sealed, the trapped oil and debris aren’t exposed to air—so they don’t darken. Instead, whiteheads appear as small, raised bumps that are typically white or flesh-toned. They can show up just about anywhere on the body, including the face, back, and shoulders.

Blackheads: blemishes referred to as “open comedones,” occur when a clogged pore stays open at the skin’s surface. They commonly appear on the nose and chin and are recognized by their small, dark bumps. Despite the misconception, their color isn’t caused by dirt—it’s the result of oil and dead skin trapped inside the pore oxidizing when exposed to air.

Acne Papules: comedones (blackheads or whiteheads) that become so inflamed that the walls of the pores break. This type of acne is characterized by redness and tender bumps on the skin. These hard, clogged pores usually look similar to a whitehead, but with a pink or red ring around them. The main indicator of acne papules is that they do not contain a yellow or white center filled with pus, as this would make them pustules. Papules can eventually become pustules, but it’s important to remember that they are two different types of acne.

Acne Pustules: The type of acne that most people imagine when they think of a “pimple” is actually known as a pustule. Pustules may look like whiteheads to the naked eye, but they have a few key differences. These acne blemishes form when a papule becomes filled with pus that contains dead white blood cells sent by your body to fight an infection. They often include a white or yellow hue at the center and are accompanied by soreness and redness.

Acne Cysts: Generally considered to be the most severe type of acne (Cystic Acne) demonstrated by deep, painful pus-filled bumps on the face, chest, or back. Acne cysts are caused by clogs that occur deep underneath the skin’s surface than other acne types. Similar to nodules, acne cysts are also more likely to leave long-lasting post-acne marks—which is why it’s crucial to avoid picking or popping this type of blemish.

Nodules: Nodules are one of the more serious forms of acne—firm, inflamed bumps that develop deep beneath the skin’s surface. They tend to be larger and more painful than other types of breakouts, forming when bacteria get trapped within the skin and cause infection. Their color can range from skin-toned to red, and without proper treatment, they often leave behind marks or discoloration. Because the inflammation from nodules can damage nearby skin tissue, they usually take longer to heal than papules and often require prescription-level care.

What causes acne and how can I treat it?

Acne can happen when oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria get trapped in your pores — but hormones, stress, and even certain skincare products can make things worse. Want to get rid of acne? Stick with a consistent skincare routine that supports your skin barrier and targets unclogging pores. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide, or benzoyl peroxide — proven power players for clearer skin.

For a deep detox or spot treatment, try our Supercharged Charcoal Masque with salicylic acid, bentonite clay, and ylang ylang—perfect for moderate use to clear congestion and calm inflammation. For daily defense, our Holy Grail Toner features the same powerhouse ingredients to keep pores clear and your skin happy.

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is just a fancy way of saying “dark spots” — those patches that decide to stick around long after a breakout, sunburn, or hormonal flare-up. It happens when your skin produces too much melanin (the pigment that gives your skin its color).

The good news? You can fade those spots with consistency and the right ingredients. Look for brightening powerhouse ingredients and don’t skip sunscreen — seriously, SPF is your skin’s real-life filter.

✨ Ready to fade those dark spots? Our Holy Grail Toner combines salicylic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C to help brighten your complexion, unclog pores, and keep your skin glowing. Add it to your routine and show hyperpigmentation who’s boss.

How to exfoliate your face?

Exfoliating is all about gently removing dead skin cells to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. The key is to pick a method that suits your skin type and add it to you regimen—but never aggressive, because over-exfoliation will irritate your skin.

Chemical exfoliants, like AHAs (Glycolic and Lactic Acids) and BHAs (Salicylic Acid), dissolve dead skin cells, while physical exfoliants manually slough away surface buildup. Many skincare pros recommend starting with a gentle approach 1–3 times a week and observing how your skin reacts. Always follow up with a moisturizer and sunscreen, because fresh skin is extra sensitive to UV rays.

Try our Smooth Operator Exfoliant Glove. Designed to gently peel away the outermost layer of skin, it helps unclog pores, smooth texture, and prep your face for your skincare. Use it 2–3 times a week and watch your skin glow like never before.

What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and how can it be treated?

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that affects many people with ovaries, causing irregular periods, excess androgen levels, and often small cysts on the ovaries. Common PCOS symptoms include acne, oily skin, weight fluctuations, hair thinning or excess hair growth, and sometimes fertility challenges.

Recognizing PCOS symptoms early and seeking appropriate care is key. Managing PCOS often requires a combination of lifestyle changes, medical guidance, and targeted PCOS treatment. While there’s no one-size-fits-all cure, options include hormonal therapy, medications to regulate insulin or androgens, and diet and lifestyle adjustments that support hormonal balance. For skincare concerns linked to PCOS, like acne or hyperpigmentation, choosing dermatologist-recommended, gentle, and effective products can help manage breakouts and keep your skin healthy.

Are your products safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

All UNFLTRD SKN products are safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding except our Holy Grail Toner, which contains retinol and a peppermint water base. Due to these ingredients, this toner should be avoided during pregnancy and while nursing.

Always check with your OB-GYN or dermatologist before starting any new skincare product during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Even safe ingredients can sometimes interact with prescription medications or sensitive skin changes.

Can I layer UNFLTRD SKN products with other skincare products?

Absolutely! Most UNFLTRD SKN products can be safely layered with other skincare products to create a routine tailored to your skin’s needs. The key is to layer from lightest to heaviest texture—for example:

  1. Cleansers & Toners – start with a clean slate (like our Holy Grail Toner).
  2. Serums & Treatments – apply active ingredients, such as niacinamide or vitamin C.
  3. Moisturizers & Oils – lock in hydration and protect your skin barrier.

A few tips for layering with other brands:

  • Avoid mixing strong actives (like high-dose retinol with strong acids) at the same time to prevent irritation.
  • Introduce new products gradually, and patch test if you’re unsure.
  • Always finish your morning routine with sunscreen—it’s non-negotiable.

Following these guidelines, you can seamlessly combine Unfltrd Skn products with your existing favorites for glowing, healthy skin.

What is the best order for my skincare routine?
